2013 International Science Olympiad: Nigeria to compete with 20 other countries in Abuja

No fewer than 21 countries including Nigeria will participate in the 2013 International Science Olympiad holding at the Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Abuja on Monday.
Others are Turkey, Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Uganda, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Malawi, Mauritania, Togo, Niger, Senegal, South Africa and Chad have also indicated interest.
A statement by the university’s Director of Academics, Gokhan Koyunlu in Abuja on Friday, said the most successful students in the competition would be awarded scholarships.
It said the programme, which is being organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, National Mathematical Centre and Nigerian Turkish Nile University, would be chaired by the Vice- Chancellor, NTNU, Prof. Huseyin Sert.
In another development, the FCT Administration said it removed a total of 12,728 illegal structures in the Federal Capital Territory in 2012 in compliance with the Abuja Master Plan.
FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, who said this while presenting his score card to the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, explained that the decision to remove the illegal structures was a painful one, but “the Abuja Master Plan must be protected.”
Mohammed said his administration had a plan target of four weeks as turnaround time in granting building plan approvals but was able to achieve eight weeks instead of the previous six months or several years.
The minister stated that all the achievements had been recorded because the Development Control Department had introduced e-vetting of building plans, apart from the creation of Development Control Information System.
He said, “Reduction in turnaround time for granting of a building plan approval has enhanced our integrity for doing business and eased reference to data and information. The FCT Administration in the year 2012 approved 1,489 building plans and we will surpass that feat in the coming years.”
