The Imo State governor, His Excellency, Rochas Okorocha has called on the members of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) to ensure that their group gets recognition by the National Assembly in line with the country’s constitution so that laws could be made to protect their rights in the course of their official duties and to regulate their activities.
Okrocha spoke through his
Commissioner for Information, Professor Nnamdi Obiaraeri, who represented him
at the just concluded National Convention of the association held in Owerri on
March 30 -31.
Speaking further at the
occasion, Obiaraeri expressed optimism that if OMPAN is properly registered with
the Federal Government, such a move will enhance the status of the association
and bring it up to a level similar to that of NUJ and NBA.
He applauded the leaders of the
association for their effort to bring together all online media practitioners
nationwide for the first time to Imo state and assured that the state
government will do all that is necessary to assist them in making the
convention a success.
Obiaraeri, who is a professor
of law from Imo State University, Owerri, mentioned some progress made by the
Rochas Okorocha - led government in the area of infrastructural development.
Earlier, the OMPAN national president,
Mr, Emeh James Anyalekwa thanked
the Imo State government for providing some logistics supports to the association
during the convention and assured that OMPAN will take steps to formalize the
status of the group.
